ROYAL PALM YACHT AND COUNTRY CLUB IN BOCA RATON DESIGNATED A CLEAN MARINA

~Marina implements sustainable practices to protect Florida’s waters~

BOCA RATON – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), together with the Clean Boating Partnership, today recognized the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club as the 228th member of the Florida Clean Marina Program. This is the 17th Clean Marina designation in Palm Beach County.

The program, which recognizes marinas and boatyards for their commitment to the protection of Florida’s waterways and natural resources, now boasts 226 Clean Marinas, 33 Clean Boatyards and 11 Clean Marine Retailers statewide.

“Becoming a Clean Marina requires a forward-looking management team and a hardworking, dedicated staff,” said DEP Southeast District Director Jack Long. “The Department is pleased that the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club is now a designated Clean Marina and is taking the initiative to preserve our waterways by reducing waste, preventing pollution and protecting our marine resources.”

The Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club, which is the 59th designated Clean Marina in the DEP Southeast District, adds 61 wet slips and a pump-out station to the Clean Marina community.

“It is an honor to be on the list of Clean Marinas for the State of Florida,” said Royal Palm Marina Manager Zack Rice. “Our goal is to continue our fifty year tradition of being a good citizen of the community and state. I hope that we inspire other marinas to join in our commitment to the environment.”

Florida has more than one million registered motorized vessels and more than 2,000 marinas – the largest number of marine facilities in the country. Drawing millions of visitors each year, Florida’s clear waters, world-class beaches and coral reefs support a $60.8 billion tourism industry, an $18.9 billion boating industry and a fishing industry that injects more than $7.5 billion a year into Florida’s communities. Protecting Florida’s waterways is essential.

“The Clean Boating Partnership applauds the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club for its commitment to Florida’s environment,” said the Partnership’s Chair Mark Leslie. “The dedication and hard work in becoming a Clean Marina is an accomplishment this facility can be proud of and we welcome it to our growing Clean Marina family.”

About the Clean Boating Partnership

The Clean Boating Partnership is a consortium of industry leaders who contribute time and input to the Clean Marina, Clean Boatyard, Clean Marine Retailer and Clean Boater programs which DEP administers to protect Florida’s waterways. The partnership includes DEP, Marine Industries Association of Florida, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, University of Florida Sea Grant Program, United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary.

About the Florida Clean Marina Program

The Florida Clean Marina Program is a voluntary designation program with a proactive approach to environmental stewardship. To become designated as a Clean Marina, facilities must implement a set of environmental measures designed to protect Florida’s waterways. These measures address critical environmental issues such as sensitive habitat, waste management, stormwater control, spill prevention and emergency preparedness. For more information about the Florida Clean Marina program, visit www.dep.state.fl.us/cleanmarina.

The Superfund arm of the Environmental Protection Agency has many challenges to overcome as they work to clear contaminants left from a 90-acre wood-treatment site on 14th Avenue North — the first of which is trust.

With a lifetime as Kerr-McGee as a neighbor and a decade of cleanup efforts, community members at a meeting Thursday night seemed hesitant to embrace Superfund as a solution.

And in fact, many of the individual dolphins that were research subjects in these groundbreaking kinds of studies are dead, prematurely.

A Conversation with Dr. Lori Marino, Emory University on Animal Planet

Some experts say that dolphins in captivity behave just like, or nearly like, dolphins in the wild. What’s your opinion?
I don’t need to give my opinion because there’s an abundance of evidence that shows that dolphins and whales in captivity show a lot of the same abnormal behaviors that are exhibited by other animals in captivity. These include things like stereotypies where they do repeated movements, self mutilation and just basically other behaviors associated with being psychologically disturbed. There are also several peer-reviewed studies that have shown elevated stress hormones in dolphins and whales in captivity.
